As many of you might have seen, the movie Frozen contained a lot of snow. Disney® filmmakers wanted to be sure that the snow looked realistic- so they hired mathematicians for help. They asked Joseph Teran, who is a mathematician at the University of California in Los Angles. Teran used computer based models to create this aesthetic phenomena. Teran says that Frozen was a new challenge because it was one of the first animated movies with 3D-snow as a common material. Now, many movies are using the same process to create a natural look.
