Researchers have found out that the cause of Alzheimer’s might have not been amyloid beta but actually a protein name tau or also known as tangles. For almost over 100 years, neuroscientists believed that amyloid was the wrongdoer in Alzheimer’s. However this protein, tau, is a very very important to the brain. Tau proteins are made by splicing a single gene of MAPT(microtubule-associated protein tau).
Tau proteins, like amyloid, are actually very beneficial to the brain at first. However, when Tau proteins become defective and fail to stabilize microtubules, they can unravel out and develop diseases like Alzheimer’s in the nervous system.
