Sphero BB-8

With Star Wars:The Force Awakens (Episode VII) out, everybody was excited about the new characters. Rey,Finn,Kylo Ren. However, there was also a new droid, BB-8.

This is the Sphero BB-8.

I was a little dissapointed when I opened the kit. I thought that we could actually build the droid from pieces in the kit, but all the parts were already there.

There are 3 main parts in the BB-8 Sphero Kit.

The head, body, and charging port.

THE HEAD:

Attached to the bottom of the head, we have wheels. There is also an add-on magnet so that head can stick on to the body.

There are also antennae, probably to receive vocal input for the holographic messages.

THE BODY:

There is not much to say about the body. Many people have taken their Sphero BB-8 apart with a band saw to figure out how it works. You can watch Tested partner with droid builder Mike Senna take the body apart and explain how the wheels work the head here.

THE CHARGING PORT:

The charging port is made out of plastic and comes with a USB charging cord. There is a STAR WARS® label on the opposite end of the charging end.

THE APP:

To control the BB-8, you would need to download an app from the app store called Sphero BB-8. While playing Star Wars music, it sets up the program to keep the BB-8 alive and running.

There are many actions you can take with the BB-8.

DRIVING:

On the left are the control panels which you can move around up, down, left, right to drive the droid.

HOLOGRAPHIC MESSAGES:

In this part of the app you can record and view holographic messages. This is a message that I recorded.

PATROL:

This is the patrol log. The BB-8 can move freely and detect collisions. When detected it is marked red in the event log. It “patrols”the area around you.

Overall, I think that the kit was really fun to play with. However, with the price, I think that the BB-8 should be able to do something useful like measure the weather temperature instead of just being a toy.
